Therapy FAQs: What to Expect When Starting Therapy in Newport Beach or Online in CA

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions — especially if this is your first time, or you’re coming back to it after a break.

You might be wondering what it’s like, how it works, or even where to begin. Whether you’re considering individual women’s therapy or men’s therapy, couples therapy, premarital counseling, or support during a life transition or another need, below are some of the questions I’m most often asked, along with answers to help you get a feel for the process and what you can expect.

If you’re considering therapy in Newport Beach or online anywhere in California, this is a place to start — and to see if this feels like the right kind of support for you.

  • Your first session is about getting to know each other and understanding what brings you to therapy. We’ll talk about your goals, your story, and what you hope will feel different. My goal is to create a safe, welcoming space where you can begin to breathe a little easier and start feeling supported from day one.

  • Sessions are typically 50 minutes. In some cases, couples and families prefer 70 minutes. Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum, and then shift to every other week as things start to feel more stable and integrated.

  • Both! I see clients throughout Orange County in person in Newport Beach, California, and also offer secure online therapy for residents anywhere in California. Many clients enjoy the flexibility of video sessions, while others prefer the connection of meeting face-to-face in the office. I also can do hybrid based on your schedule as to what is most convenient for you that week.

  • Therapy sessions are $175 for 50 minutes, and 70-minute extended sessions are $225.

I believe everyone deserves access to therapy, regardless of financial circumstances. I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots based on need and availability. You’re welcome to reach out to ask about current openings.

If I’m not the right fit, or if finances are a barrier, I’m happy to provide referrals — getting you connected with the care and support you deserve is what matters most. Please reach out and I will help.

  • I am an out-of-network provider, which means I don’t bill insurance directly. However, many PPO plans offer partial reimbursement for out-of-network sessions. If you are eligible, I can provide a monthly Superbill to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. I recommend calling your insurance carrier to see if you are eligible for out-of-network benefits.

  • You can book a free 15-minute consultation by calling/texting me directly at 949-371-5534. The consultation is very casual - we’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, answer any questions, and decide together if it feels like a good fit. There is no obligation to set up a session after the consultation.

  • I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots for clients who may need a lower fee. These are based on availability and individual circumstances.

If cost feels like a barrier, you’re always welcome to reach out. If I don’t have availability, I’m also happy to offer referrals — getting you connected with the right support is the most important thing to me.
